Textiles

Textiles have a rich history in Scotland. Our earliest ancestors used spinning, weaving and basket making for making clothes, catching food and providing shelter – relying on natural plant dyes provide colour and interest. Tapestries were used to show status and tartan became the symbolic national dress towards the end of the 18th century.

These days Scotland is known for more than tartan and is recognised as a world-class producer of cashmere, tweed and knitwear.

Textile artists in and around the Cairngorms National Park also strive for excellence in their work. Visit our members to see a range of unique garments, appliquéd greetings cards, bags, accessories, home furnishings and much more.
