Pat Hughes

Painter, Sculptor
Location: Newtonmore

Roaring Stag 2007-2011, ceramic

Pat loves to experiment and can work freely and confidently in a wide variety of media, including ceramic sculpture, acrylic or oil painting. Drawing and painting underlies all her work and her most recent output includes acrylic/mixed media compositions synthesising images with songs.

Pat graduated in Fine Art in the early 1980’s and worked for a while as a mural artist before qualifying as a teacher, progressing to be Head of Art at a large secondary school in Hertfordshire. It was while teaching that she learned to work in clay, and a major part of her creative output is of sculptures in that medium through which she has developed a very personal and tactile style.

Always moving onwards and upwards she eventually found herself in the Highlands of Scotland.

What a fantastic place to be! Badenoch – The Drowned Place – is the area in which she now lives and she is surrounded by moorland peat bogs, alluvial flood plains of the River Spey and the Cairngorm plateau with its (usually) year round snow and subarctic tundra…

It is impossible not to be inspired by such a Place: the land, the wildlife, the community.

Her artwork is a celebration of her life, loves and environment.
